In recent times, who appeared in the nineteenth century, has purely represented the teachings established by Srila Rupa Goswami.
Srila Sachchidananda Bhaktivinoda Thakur, the nineteenth century pioneer of Krishna consciousness, was born in 1838 in Bengal. He worked tirelessly to preserve the spiritual tradition and literature of India; he composed, edited, and published more than 100 books in Sanskrit, Bengali, and English.

The pioneer of pure devotion, it was Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur who foretold that people the world over would join under the bannered Lord Sri Caitanya’s Harinama Sankirtan [congregational chanting of the holy names of Lord Krishna]. By his profuse writings, Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur infused the current which was to be the renaissance of a devotional civilization, which had become overgrown with spurious interpretations und misrepresentation.

His style of presentation was chiefly analytic, simple, and appealing. He taught that the apparently sophisticated philosophies and doctrines which deviate one to materialism, salvation, voidism, etc. [karma, jnana, sunya-vada, etc.] must be abandoned by the true aspirants of devotion; yet, he acknowledged that from the universal standpoint such “charming” distractions served to segregate the insincere from the sincere. Thus he foresaw that inevitably the intelligentsia of the world must come to appreciate the all-attractive path of divine love given by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur prayed for an empowered personality to continue his teachings, and his prayers were answered in the person of his son, Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Prabhupad who presented Krishna consciousness extensively throughout India at the beginning of this century…

Ekadasi is a Sanskrit word for number 11. It means the 11th day of each half of the month in the Vedic lunar calendar. So there are two Ekadasi days in each month on the Vedic calendar. One is in the first half of the month whilst the moon is waxing, or growing. This is known as the bright fortnight. The second is in the second half of the month whilst the moon is waning, or shrinking. This is known as the dark fortnight.
Ekadasi has been set aside for us to observe a fast to please Krishna and is a special day for devotees. Bread, pasta, lentils, rice, as well as beans and preparations made from bean flour doesn’t eat on ekadasi.
We can fast on Ekadasi in order to minimize the demands of the body so we can engage more of our time in the service of the Lord by chanting or performing some other devotional service. The best thing to do on these fasting days is to remember the pastimes of Krishna and to hear His Holy name being sung and chanted. On the day of Ekadasi we should plan to chant more rounds and read more devotional literature. If possible we should spend more time with devotees.
So as we can see Ekadasi is a time for us to develope our spiritual capacity. lIt is a time for us to increase our practice and to put a little more effort into our devotional service.
